In Memory of Michaela

Happy New Year Dear Friends!

The earth has taken another couple of turns around the sun since I last showed up in this space. I thought my grief was on its way out, but it was just the beginning. I had just regained my center last Spring when my identical twin sister committed suicide. Losing her has impacted me profoundly. Healing is feeling and I have felt it all. In memory of her I wanted to share my words from her Celebration of Life this past Summer.

When we lose someone so suddenly, it is hard to accept the loss. It feels like you are going to wake up and it all will have just been a terrible nightmare. Days turn into weeks and weeks become months and the reality becomes starkly visible. She is gone. She won’t be at work on Monday. We aren’t taking the trip to Spain with Linda and all the cousins that we intended to. She won’t be at Sarah’s graduation. She’s not going to move in with her friend Michelle to start a new life. The girls weekend to Avila beach with Suzanne and Jennifer is now just an idea that will never manifest. So many more memories we had to create. So many more memories she had to create.

This is not how our love story was meant to end. Not so soon. Not in this way! I know that Michaela’s departure has been very shocking and painful. But Michaela is at peace. This I know for certain. It helps me to imagine that she has embarked on a journey. Though unseen, she hasn’t departed forever. Her presence lingers in our hearts, and her laughter echoes in the whispers of the breeze.

I asked Spirit for one word that would best describe Michaela and I was given, “Hostess”. I laughed out loud because one of her and my favorite games to play together as children was “Hotel”. We also did hostess duty for our dads restaurant when we were in grade school. Later, as teenagers, we worked together as housekeepers at the Green Gables Inn in Pacific Grove where we went to High School. Not surprisingly, at our senior Awards dinner, she received the Achievement Award for Home Economics. She was an excellent chef and a talented seamstress. She also had a magic touch when it came to gardening. Plants flourished under her care.

Cara & Michaela, Baja California

It was not surprising that she became a stay-at-home Mom when her son Matthew was born. When her children arrived, I saw her come alive like never before. Matthew and Sarah were her greatest treasure. She devoted herself to attachment style parenting. She educated herself about the benefits of breast feeding and a family bed and she embraced it all. When my daughter Caroline was born, she was there for me with so much encouragement and support. We were living in the same housing development in Foxboro, Massachusetts at that time. We could actually walk to each other’s homes. Those were magical times.

A few years and one relocation later and she and I were both back in California. Sarah had arrived and just a few months behind her, my son Spencer was born. So many beautiful memories of those days when we were both just Moms. We were able to spend as much time together as we liked. After I went back to work, Summer was when got to see each other the most. We always enrolled our kids in the summer reading program at the Carmel Library where our mom had worked when we were growing up.

Little did we know that the library would become the next chapter in her life when Matthew and Sarah were no longer children. My sister adored working for the library. She was an avid reader, often reading more than one book at a time. She was also a talented and prolific writer. She graduated with a degree in Journalism from Fresno State and she used the skills she learned to write a novel and many short stories. The library, where she was known as Ms. Michaela, was her Happy Place. She had a number of different part-time jobs at Harrison Memorial before getting her full-time job in the children’s department. I remember clearly when she found out that she got hired. She told me it was her dream job and it was. She got to create her own summer reading events for a whole new generation of children. My son has fond memories of volunteering at these events. The Star Wars themed one is a favorite. She loved her co-workers and the young patrons and she loved being in Carmel.

But she also loved being a Hostess. Most of you probably know that she also owned a business, Valley Eden. She and her partner created their very own little Inn, just like the one she and I pretended to own when we were girls. If you ever had the opportunity to stay at Valley Eden, you have been blessed. She was an excellent Hostess and she had over 250 rave reviews to prove it. She loved sharing her hospitality and our magical Valley with guests from all over.

Michaela was also a Hostess and a mom to many fur babies of the feline persuasion. She started out fostering kittens. She had never considered herself to be a cat person, but once she fostered her first set of kittens, she was smitten. Roxy became her first cat baby. Many more would follow. She would promise herself that she wasn’t going to adopt the foster kittens but, invariably, she could not help herself. She became a “Cat Lady” and she fully embraced it. The cats, like her plants, flourished under her care.

Michaela was curious about the universe and was a deeply spiritual person. Nature was her church. She was kind and compassionate and held a deep affection for Mother Earth and all her creatures. She loved live music and attended shows any opportunity she got. She was also a dancer and a Yogi. One of her offerings at Valley Eden was sacred dance and movement. Both were part of her daily practice. I will remember the golden hues in her hair and those sparkling, naughty eyes. With each rising sun, I will hear her laughter. I will call out to her, seek her counsel, and connect with her just like before. She is not gone, she has just slipped into the other room.

I look forward to sharing more with you in the coming weeks and months. My healing journey continues to be guided by magic, plant medicine and the cycles of the Universe. May 2025 bring you blessings of all kinds.

In Love,

Cara

2 Weeks of Eclipse Energy. Are you ready?

Hi Friends

I write this as we are about to enter an intense 2 weeks of energy. We have :

  • Partial SOLAR Eclipse Oct 25, 2022 2° Scorpio 00′
  • Total LUNAR Eclipse November 8, 2022 16° Taurus 01′

Eclipses tend to bring sudden changes and shake-ups. This is definitely going to be compounded because the earth’s Geo-magnetics are currently quite volatile. Scientists are recording a record number of solar flares (M Class and even a rare X class flare has been recorded recently).

As the Sun or the Moon falls into the darkness during an Eclipse, our hidden emotions rise and we have to deal with our shadow side more (Scorpio). Soul literally brings out all our old stuff in order for us to face the fear and make big changes. Things can get heavy, especially for empaths as it can be difficult not to be drawn into other people’s stuff.

During this time, the following symptoms are not uncommon:

Dizziness

Insomnia

Friction in relationships

Fatigue and body aches

Out of body sensations

Radical spiritual awakenings

This is all part of your evolution, clean-up, upgrade and ascension process.

Healing waters of Carmel River

According to Hindu tradition, taking a bath in a river after the eclipse is considered extremely beneficial. It is believed that taking a bath in a holy river leads to the attainment of Moksha and washing away of sins. If you are not able to take a bath in a river, any old water will do.

There is also some good news! The period between eclipses is known as the Eclipse Doorway (2 weeks this time) and can be a time of radical transformation, instant manifestation and magic. Don’t be surprised if incredible gifts and opportunities drop into your lap at this time.

Please remember that anything that exits your life during an Eclipse, was probably not meant for you. If something new enters your life, it is for your highest good.

Love,

Cara

P.S. On Saturday, 22 October 2022 (love those 2s!) for the first time in 150 years, the Venus Star Point will enter the sign of Libra offering us a great new chapter of change.  I found a great resource on the Venus Star Point if you’d like to read more : https://sophiavenus.com/venus-star-point/

A Black Moon, Two Eclipses & The Great Benefic? Wow, May is going to be interesting…

Hi Everyone

I hope you haven’t made too many plans for the weekend! We are in for a bumper dose of cosmic energy as Eclipse season hits us.

On April 30th we will have a SOLAR Eclipse. A solar eclipse can only take place at the phase of new moon, when the moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth and its shadows, also known as its umbra, falls upon Earth’s surface. Just before and during sunset, the Moon will cover a part of the sun causing a partial eclipse. This new moon is also called a BLACK MOON (the second new moon in the same calendar month). It will also mark the end of Ramadan for Muslims which means that their month-long period of fasting has come to an end. The celebration of Eid will be on May 1 or May 2, depending on where you are in the world and festivities will begin after the local sighting of the crescent, slightly illuminated moon.

Astrologically speaking, experts are hinting that this eclipse is a peak point in our collective destiny and that shocks and surprises involving politicians/global figures will shape us all going forward. I have my eye on the British Royal family:-)

Mid-month we will have another eclipse. This time a TOTAL LUNAR Eclipse (May 15/16th). This is a big deal and definitely one of the peak points of this year! We can feel this eclipse energy up to a month before and up to 6 months later. This particular eclipse is happening in the sign of SCORPIO. There is always intensity at any full moon but this Scorpio flavor is emotional and supercharged. Scorpio will bring to light dirty laundry, secrets, and dark and hidden matters which are likely to play out on the public stage courtesy of the full moon.  I plan to look at what I can RELEASE that is toxic in my life as well as the shadow matters that I need to air.

Another thing to bear in mind is that from May 11th Jupiter will move into Aries. Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac and a Cardinal Sign. This is another strong energy that I think we are going to feel because Jupiter- also known as The Great Benefic (/bɪˈnɛfɪk/) – will always bring EXPANSION and PERSONAL GROWTH.

**Here’s a fun exercise for you to do**: Jupiter has a 12-year cycle so it moved into Aries in June 2010. Look back at your life and into your old journals if possible. What was happening around June 2010? Which life areas were booming/changing/expanding at this time?  This is likely to be the same life area that will be expanding again this time around. You should also look at which HOUSE in your chart is likely to be most affected by this energy. You can do this by looking at your specific birth chart. If like me, you have your Sun/Moon/Ascendant in Aries then this should be a time of huge opportunity and upward momentum. Also remember to take action (Aries is all about action) on things you want to look back at in 12 years’ time and say Yes, that’s what I dreamed-in and worked on in a big way in May 2022!

Friends, we are in for a bumper ride. I am sending you love and I hope that your life is full of unexpected wonder! Astrology is not an exact science but it sure helps to know what energies are at play doesn’t it? Besides, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US President said: “The best way to predict the future is to create it”.

Please let me know how you feel about eclipses and share any interesting rituals, stories, and facts with me.

Mayan Wisdom, Cacao & Venus – Blessings all around

Hi Everyone

As you know I am obsessed with ancient astrological traditions. The Mayan wisdom is my favorite at the moment. I’ve been learning about this with a great Teacher for the past year. His name is Mark Elmy and he has a great website called www.thefourpillars.net

I feel very connected to the knowledge on a deep, personal level.

“Maya” is really an umbrella term for many different indigenous ethnic groupings who may speak different Mayan languages such as Yucatec, K’ichean, Kekchi, or Mopan. The descendants of the Maya are still around today, many of them living in their ancestral homelands, like Guatemala. I’ve never traveled to the ancient sites but when called, I will jump.

As far as astronomy goes, the Mayans were light years ahead of us “civilized” folk. They built observatories that were aligned with the movement of the planets. There is a group of three temples at Uaxactún which aligns perfectly to : *The Sun’s rising at Summer Solstice; *The two equinoxes; *Winter Solstice

El Caracol (at Chichen Itza, Mexico) is another fascinating site. I love the name because it has CARA in it:-). This ancient monument is also an observatory but this one was strategically aligned to track the path of VENUS throughout the year! Venus was very special to the Maya because they considered this bright planet to be the twin of the Sun. They used the information about where Venus was in the sky to plan their raids and battles. I am totally planning to do the same.

My Western astrology tells me that Venus will be in retrograde from December 19, 2021 all the way through to January 29, 2022. As you know, Venus is the planet related to all things LOVE and relationships. When a planet is in retrograde we can expect some ups and downs in that area. Venus retrograde is not a good time to meet a new love and old relationships from our past often come back into our fields. Any good astrologer would say: Keep Calm and guard your heart.

I wonder what the Mayans would have said about the time of retrograde? Probably something about staying home and drinking Cacao — their heart elixir of choice.

I love learning more about these things and hope to share some more with you. As the tag line for my website says: I am indeed a Seeker of Magic and Spreader of Light.

Love & Blessings,

Cara

P.S. Here is a great article and some ideas about how to use Cacao to open up your heart. Enjoy: https://medium.com/cacao-ceremonies/morning-cacao-recipes-rituals-a00ab12fbfa9
